Delivering Safe, High Quality Water to West Des Moines


West Des Moines Water Works
delivers water and services for one of Iowa’s fastest growing cities. As a full-service municipal utility, the Water Works is 100 percent funded from water service revenues; no property taxes or other funding sources are used to operate, maintain or expand its operations.

Established more than 110 years ago, the Water Works employs 40 people and operates a treatment plant with the capacity to produce 10 million gallons a day. In addition, WDMWW owns and manages:

  • 17 shallow wells;
  • 4 deep wells;
  • 4 water storage reservoirs;
  • 6 water towers;
  • 10 booster pumping stations;
  • 3,500 fire hydrants and 3,900 valves
  • and more than 285 miles of water main infrastructure.

 

The A. C. Ward Municipal Water Treatment Plant at 1505 Railroad Avenue has iron removal, softening, filtration, disinfection and a state certified laboratory. In addition to operating and maintaining this 10 million gallon per day facility, these men and women are responsible for the operation of more than 285 miles of water mains, approximately 3,500 fire hydrants and 3,900 valves, 21 wells, 10 pumping stations, 4 water storage reservoirs, and 6 water towers.
