West Des Moines Water Works Distribution Shop
West Des Moines Water Works (WDMWW) is constructing a new Water Distribution Shop west of the existing A.C. Ward Municipal Water Treatment Plant. Work will begin in the spring of 2025. WDMWW anticipated staff moving into the new building by the end of the year. Completion of the landscaping work will carry over into early 2026.
Construction of the new shop will bring a significant improvement for the Water Works. The new 11,592sf shop, with a 9,737sf main floor and a 1,855sf mezzanine will significantly expand the space available to this department – which is currently working out of a 3,144sf space originally constructed in the 1950s.
WDMWW acquired 0.79 acres of Holiday Park from the City of West Des Moines to accommodate the project. The Distribution Shop site was selected to keep all WDMWW staff based in the same location. After the shop is constructed, WDMWW will be constructing a small parking lot and shade structure to the west of the new facility for park users to enjoy.
West Des Moines Water Works hired Edge Commercial as the General Contractor for the project at the March 24 meeting of the Board of Trustees. Edge was selected following receipt of bids from eight contractors.
Edge plans to begin work in the project in mid-April. Their initial construction schedule calls for site and underground pipe work in the spring with walls beginning to appear in mid-June. The building will be enclosed by early August with the building being move in ready by the end of 2025.
