Delivering Safe, High Quality Water to West Des Moines

West Des Moines Water Works
delivers water and services for one of Iowa’s fastest growing cities. As a full-service municipal utility, the Water Works is 100 percent funded from water service revenues; no property taxes or other funding sources are used to operate, maintain or expand its operations.

Established more than 110 years ago, the Water Works employs 37 people and operates a treatment plant with the capacity to produce 12 million gallons a day. In addition, WDMWW owns and manages:

  • 19 shallow wells;
  • 3 deep wells;
  • 4 water storage reservoirs;
  • 5 water towers;
  • 6 booster pumping stations;
  • 2,000 fire hydrants and valves
  • and more than 220 miles of water main infrastructure.

The A. C. Ward Municipal Water Treatment Plant at 1505 Railroad Avenue has iron removal, softening, filtration, disinfection and a state certified laboratory. In addition to operating and maintaining this 12 million gallon per day facility, these men and women are responsible for the operation of more than 220 miles of water mains, approximately 2000 fire hydrants and valves, 22 wells, 6 pumping stations, 4 water storage reservoirs, and 5 water towers.

Administrative offices for the Water Works are located in the West Des Moines City Hall at 4200 Mills Civic Parkway. The General Manager, Accounting and Customer Service Departments and Water Meter Readers work from this location.

Please feel free to contact our staff at (515) 222-3460 about any water related concern. Emergency service is available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
